A great nation does not hide its history. It faces its flaws and corrects them.

George W. Bush
About This Quote

When a country doesn’t give its history, it is hiding its flaws and trying to ignore them. The United States of America has been hiding the dark parts of its history for a long time. In fact, President George W. Bush went so far as to say that the Constitution was a “living document” in which all citizens were free to interpret any way they wanted.

As an adult, I can see how this approach might have made sense during a time when slavery was legal, but it is completely inappropriate today. We know that not every word in the Constitution is perfect and there are parts of our history that we have yet to face.
